Not just anyone can call themselves a "Continence Nurse" and do "Continence Assessments".
The professional title recognised is "Nurse Continence Specialist" or NCS for short. It used to be "Continence Nurse Advisor" or CNA for short.
To become a Nurse Continence Specialist, it takes additional post-graduate nursing education and skills development, as well as being a Registered Nurse.
Specialists attend lots of ongoing professional development to ensure current evidence-based nursing practice.
Make sure the provider attending the Assessment is suitably qualified and/or very experienced.
Ask them what qualifications they hold!
Nurse Continence Specialists can provide clients with nursing based assessments, management advice & evidence based strategies.
Visit the peak professional body "CoNSA" for further professional info - www.consa.org.au
At Continence Confidence, we believe that a QUALITY Continence Assessment does take time.
We are dealing with sensitive issues that are often under-reported & ignored.
A thorough assessment visit (face to face or telehealth) takes on average 1 hr - 1.5hrs, and can be to 2hrs, depending on client complexity and need.
A decent, human generated report (we don't use ChatGPT!!) can be several pages and can on average take 2-3hrs.
A Continence report helps to guide management strategies, funding & product requirements and care required.
We might also need spend time to research products to suit, order samples for you & we provide accurate pricing from suppliers.
We also offer a mobile service, so you can discuss your bladder & bowel concerns with discretion.
Our peak bodies in Australia, as we do too, advocate for a more appropriate 6-7hrs per intervention.
Our clients can be helped with -
Good bladder habits - fluid intake advice; bladder training; pelvic floor exercises; diagnosing urinary retention via portable ultrasound
Good bowel habits - fibre advice, laxative advice for constipation management; strategies for faecal incontinence (bowel leakage) & bowel training.
Product Advice - knowing the best type of pad to use, cost effectiveness; samples to try; washable products to wear & use around home.
Catheter Assessment - troubleshooting advice, product advice, caring for catheter tips.
Bedwetting programs - to help kids cure their bedwetting overnight.
Referring to other colleagues (eg Physiotherapists & Occupational Therapists) when we know our knowledge scope has been exceeded.
It truly is more than just supplying a pad!!!
